Living in Utah means we are lucky enough to get to celebrate a fun holiday, Pioneer Day! There are celebrations across the state, and if you’re looking for one, check out the Pioneer Day Festival and Progressive Dinner at the American West Heritage Center in Cache Valley on Saturday, July 21 for just $6! To save $1, make a donation to the Cache Community Food Pantry.

From 10 am to 4 pm, you can help volunteers on the 1917 farm make hand-churned ice cream and butter, milk a cow, and feed chickens. You’ll enjoy marbles competitions and get to see one of the last functioning Gatling guns in the country fire off a few rounds. The Pioneer site will host pie-eating contests, a pioneer spa, and log-sawing competitions. You can learn how to build a fire with flit and steel, make a medicine bag, and throw a tomahawk. Kids can ride trains and ponies, including the huge 1911 Case steam engine, pan for gold, and play water games. Your family will also enjoy a dramatized gun fight by the General Mercantile.

The Handcart Progressive Dinner starts at 6 pm (reservations required, call 435-245-6050). You’ll get to pull a handcart through the center to each course of your meal.
