Kids Summer Reading Book ideas

I’m a huge fan of my kids reading all they can get.  Being a bit of a book worm myself I may be a bit biased, but I love it when my kids find a series they just can’t get enough of.  As soon as my oldest daughter could follow a chapter book (about 5-6 yrs old) I began reading to her from stories on this list.  She is hooked (yeah!!!) and now reads to her younger sisters – who will read books at their level as well.  I’d love to hear your kids favorites – we are always on the lookout for a new series.  We get lots from the library, but having some of our favorites around permanently is so nice when there doesn’t seem to be much going on or we are on a trip.  We have re-read “Ellie, the Pony Crazed Princess” so many times that the younger kids have them memorized – which makes it easier for my now 6 year old to begin reading them on her own.

The Boxcar Children Bookshelf (The Boxcar Children Mysteries, Books 1-12) is forever a classic.  I think #1 is my all time favorite, but my daughters seem to love all of them quite a bit.  If you buy each book individually you can expect to pay about $5 per book (even for the Kindle versions) so getting them in a set is for sure a better price. $27.16 for this set (shipped free!) which comes out to $2.26 per book.

I mentioned this one above – Ellie, The Pony-Crazed Princess is a favorite of ours. Ellie is a Princess and her parents want her to behave like a lady and dress her in pink (that’s what all little girls think of a princess, right?) But Ellie only wants to take care of and ride her horses and play with the cooks granddaughter. She’s very loveable. This was a favorite at about 5 years old to listen to and is still loved by my 8 year old. Reading level needs to be about 1st-2nd grade to read alone.

So I’m not familiar with this set – Hardy Boys – but my husband said it was a favorite if his at 10-14 years old.  The Hardy Boys Starter Set is on Amazon for $18.27 (includes the first 6 books) which would be $3.00/book (hardcover) – look to the right side of the screen to see this lower price. This series is about 2 brothers who get involved in all kinds of adventures while solving mysteries.

One of my absolute favorites as a young teen for a good adventure are the Chris Heimerdinger books. These books are based on finding a way to time travel between current day and historical scripture events (mostly Book of Mormon stories). Highly recommend if you are up for a good adventure!

Another similar series my daughter found recently is similar to the idea above – but covers more Biblical events called Believe and You’re There. Includes title like “At the Miracles of Jesus” and “When Ester Saved her People”.

The ever classic (and promotes a “good attitude” hehe!) is Pollyanna. We are big fans of the movie ($6.71!).  Another similar and one of my personal favorites is Heidi. I was so excited to find Heidi: Adapted for Young Readers so my girls can read it earlier by themselves.

Reader Rebecca reminded me that there are often great finds at Target in the dollar section (sometimes the books are $2.50) and include great titles like Black Beauty. What an awesome find that would be!

One last pick of mine – are the The Little House Collection. I’ve even found a one re-done for younger readers (started with that one when my oldest was 4-5 years of age listening – read alone at 6 and graduate to the full series at about 8-9) at the Library.

So there are a few of my favorite picks – Can you tell all about my personality now?  I’m a country girl for sure.  What are some of your favorites?
