I’ve had a bunch of people ask me why I always get so excited when Smiths (and other Kroger affiliates) offer the 4x Fuel Points on Gift Cards. So here it is. The math behind why I always pay with gift cards, if I can.
Here’s how fuel points work. Every 100 Fuel Points you earn will get you 10 cents off per gallon. You can get up to $1.00 off per fill-up and you can get up to 35 gallons per fill-up.
Here is how I get 14% off at Amazon every day!!
When Smith’s has the 4x Fuel Point Sale on Gift Cards I go in and pick up a $100 Amazon Gift Card. This gives me an automatic $.40 off at the pump. Since I can get up to 35 gallons per fill-up I wait until both of our vehicles are on (or close to) empty (you can always take some gas cans to fill up as well if you don’t have two cars that will hold 35 gallons). This way I make sure to use the full 35 gallon limit. Here is where the math comes in.
- I pay $100 for the gift card.
- I get 35 gallons and save $.40/gallon
- Which is a $14.00 savings.
- Basically I just saved $14.00 off $100 or 14%!!! SWEET!
By the way, you don’t need to get a $100 Amazon gift card. I just used a $100 for easy math. The percentage will be the same no matter the amount you get as long as you hit the 100 points. (So make sure to get at least $25 worth)
You can do this with any gift card (not just Amazon)!! Even when you are only earning 2x the points you are still going to save 7%! That is math that I like.
So whenever I see that Smith’s is offering 4x Fuel Points on Gift Cards I go in and stock up! So should you. It will help you budget and you will save 14% off everything you buy. Just make sure to remember to use those Fuel Rewards.
